What is a New Set of Tires service?

The New Set of Tires service is the changing and replacement of 4 tires for your vehicle for 4 old ones.  Our Lube Stop Technicians can help you decide what tires to change to between winter tires, summer tires and all-season tires.  They can also help you determine if wheels should be included in the new tire change service or not.

Most people in Alberta keep two sets of good tires for their vehicles – winter and summer.  Depending on the season, 1 set will be on the vehicle and the other in storage.  Our climate and typical road conditions warrant this ideal.  These 2 sets of seasonal tires have very different properties from one another.  This is because roads in winter versus summer also have very different conditions.  So to maximize safety, it’s crucial to use tires that are right for the season.

What are New Tires for?

New tire changes are required when old tires have worn out their tread.  Worn tread leads to flats, blow outs, and potentially dangerous driving situations.  Tires are meant to have tread.  So, every few years you need to check your tread on all 4 tires on both sets.

It’s possible that the tread on each set is unevenly worn across all 4 tires.  One might be tempted to continue to use the tires that have some tread left.  But this can lead to other problems.  Uneven tread and wear often cause your vehicle to shimmy or be unbalanced.  That’s not good because your tires are meant to grip the road evenly across all 4 tires for maximum maneuverability.  So, it’s always best to change all 4 at the same time.  It’s a safe decision.

Tires are generally classified based on the season they’re intended for.  They include summer, winter and all season.  Each of these has different properties for handling the weather and resulting road conditions.  These properties are outlined below for both winter and summer.

New Winter Tire Properties

  • Rubber is designed to be flexible with deep treads to grip the road better
  • Tread increases maneuverability and rolling resistance in snow
  • Rubber does not withstand warm pavement or gravel roads well
  • Have higher road noise
  • Accelerates faster on snow

New Summer Tire Properties

  • Rubber has increased grip to handle maneuvers on wet and dry roads better
  • Tread lasts longer in warm temperatures
  • Rolling resistance is lower and provides better fuel economy
  • Have lower road noise
  • Accelerates faster on dry or wet roads
  • Performs poorly on ice and snow

All Season New Tire Properties

  • Are more like winter tires than summer
  • Are NOT meant for extreme winter weather road conditions
  • Can use in all seasons in milder climates
  • Average rolling resistance and fuel economy
  • Medium road noise

Let’s Talk Safety

Lube Stop is 100% committed to ensuring your vehicle’s engine and the components it powers are all operating as they should.  We are also 100% committed to ensuring that your safety is taken care of, too.  This means checking that all the parts of your vehicle that keep you safe, are working as well.  These include the following list of items.

  • A/C and Heating System
  • Air Bags
  • Batteries
  • Electrical Charging System
  • Exhaust System
  • Ignition & Timing System
  • Spare Tires
  • Taillights
  • Headlights
  • Turn Signals
  • Vehicle Horn
  • Windshield
  • Windshield Wipers
  • Any Leaks, Squeaks, Rattles or Odours

These safety checks are included in Lube Stop’s Precision Based Recommendations process. Specifically, they are included in their 37+ Point Inspections that are performed each time you drive into one of our shops.  There are 15 or more safety checks performed during this standard practice. When an issue is detected, Lube Stop technicians bring those matters to your attention and make suggestions as to how to address them.  It is important to have a fully functioning car, truck, or SUV, but it’s also important to have a safe drive for you and your family.  So, when you come to Lube Stop, rest assured that we will be checking for both your vehicle’s health and your own personal safety while driving.

Why Do I Need a New Set of Tires service?

Ideally, the New Set of Tires service should happen when your tire tread indicates you need them.  Your Lube Stop technician will help you determine this.  This tread inspection should take place twice every year – during summer and during winter.

When your tread remains good, you should ask for the Seasonal Tire Change Overs service or the Tire Swap service instead of the New Set of Tires service.  These tire changes and swaps are for your good tires in storage, not new tires.  A change over is different than a swap because it involves one set of wheels and two sets of tires.  It involves keeping your existing wheels while only switching out the rubber tires.  This is initially the less expensive option as it doesn’t require purchasing a second set of wheels.  But, in the long run, it could cost more because it takes a bit longer to swap out just tires versus the whole wheel with tires.  A tire swap is the same thing only it involves changing both the tires and the rims.

We do these change overs and swaps so that our customers can avoid accidents from having the wrong tires on at the wrong time of year.  In other words, your car, truck or SUV will maneuver much better making your ride much safer.  Additionally, they will make for a much smoother and comfortable ride.

So, it is fair to conclude that leaving worn winter tires or summer tires on your vehicle is NOT something you want to do.

That’s why we check your tires every visit.  We need to make sure you are aware of the issues and potential safety concerns.  We understand that it costs a bit up front, but could be a life saver in the long run.

How Often Do I Need It?

Summer tires should go on sometime after April-May.  Winter tires should go on sometime after October-November. Also, you can use the 7 degrees rule.  This rule is that you should change to summer tires when the normal temperature gets to plus 7 degrees Celsius.  And, you should change to winter tires when the normal temperature gets to minus 7 degrees Celsius.  Of course, we should check your tires out anytime you have observed issues or have questions.  Your owner’s manual will also advise you to do these at various intervals.  Please check your manual.

Also, lean on us at Lube Stop for advice.  We use a system of processes called Precision Based Recommendations to help investigate a vehicle’s overall condition.  This system of inspection and trouble shooting helps us get a clearer picture of your car, truck, or SUV as it stands, today.  That is because it removes the guess work.  Learn more about this system below.

Context for these Services

Your vehicle uses an internal combustion engine.  This engine uses the combustion of fuel to power almost everything.  This is done when fuel alongside an air oxidizer and spark plugs creates a working fluid flow circuit inside a combustion chamber.

In your internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine.  The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotors and nozzles.  This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful work.

Typically, your combustion engine is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil.  Your engine is the hub for many things, including those listed below.

  • combustion chamber
  • cylinder head
  • camshaft
  • set of spark plugs
  • valvetrain
  • valves
  • rocker arms
  • pushrods
  • lifters
  • fuel injectors
  • pistons
  • connecting rods
  • engine block
  • crankcase
  • crankshaft
  • timing system
  • timing chain

All these work in unison to power all the other systems within your vehicle.  Without a fully functioning engine, everything else suffers.  So, let us at Lube Stop keep your engine functioning and everything else that relies on it.
