What is a Suspension Fluid Changes service?

Lube Stop’s Suspension Fluid Changes service is the replacement of the suspension fluid that is used to absorb and dampen the forces exerted on your vehicle’s suspension when it is under pressure.

The suspension is a system consisting of tires, tire air, springs, shock absorbers and linkages that connects a vehicle to its wheels and allows relative motion between the two.  Suspension systems must support both road holding/handling and ride quality, which are sometimes at odds with each other.  Specifically, the suspension system maximizes the friction between the tires and the road to provide steering stability and good handling.  The springs support the vehicle weight and absorb and reduce excess energy from road shocks, along with the shock absorbers and struts.

Suspension Fluid is a hydraulic fluid that works with a spring to lessen the shock on every down-stroke and up-stroke.  If your suspension fluid is dirty or contaminated, it doesn’t circulate as well as it should.  That’s why you have it changed or flushed.

Lube Stop provides this service as needed.  To determine if it is needed, we look for signs that the fluid is dirty or contaminated.  So, a visual inspection to detect pollutants or leaking is done.  Following that, Lube Stop also inspects for shimmying wheels and a bouncy ride.  If they are present, we recommend replacing the fluid to the customer.  If the customer agrees, then we proceed with the Suspension Fluid Change or Flush service.

So, always bring any indicators of trouble to the attention of our Lube Stop technicians.  These include signs of leaking fluid and bouncing or shaking while driving.  From there, we will trouble shoot and determine if you need to change or flush your fluid.

We do all this so you can enjoy the benefits of a reliable suspension system.

What is Suspension Fluid for?

Suspension fluid’s main purpose is to provide hydraulic assistance for your suspension system.  It protects the suspension system by dampening forces exerted while driving.  Without it, your vehicle is more likely to unintentionally bottom out, drift, and shake.

Suspension oil is most often made of a combination of mineral oil and synthetic oil.  Mineral oil is a by-product of petroleum refining.  Synthetic oils are the result of cracking and modifying these molecules eve further.

The process of cleaning your shocks and replacing the suspension fluid is quite tedious and requires good working knowledge of the shocks.  Lube Stop technicians should be used to do this.  It’s not a good idea to do it yourself.  So, ask our technicians to inspect and address any issues you may be noticing.  They’ll check to see if the fluid needs to be replaced or just topped off.

Why Do I Need a Suspension Fluid Changes service?

The Suspension Fluid Changes service is the replacement, changing or flushing of your vehicle’s suspension fluid.  You need to do this so that your vehicle can continue to dampen forces exerted on the suspension system.  Clean fluid helps your vehicle’s suspension system deliver lots of benefits.  For example, it allows for reduced bottoming out and shimmying.

We do these fluid changes so that our customers can avoid problems with their car, truck, or SUV.  The fluid is an important maintenance item responsible for ensuring your suspension system does not fail.  This is because when fluid is clean it does its job better.  For example, it protects the vehicle from contaminants that can cause major damage to the vehicle’s shocks and struts.

So, it is fair to conclude that dirty, contaminated suspension fluid is NOT something you want to ignore.

That’s why we check the suspension fluid every visit.  We need to make sure that it is clean and functioning as it should.  We understand that it costs a little in the short run to change this fluid out.  But it saves a lot in the long run.

How Often Do I Need It?

The fluid should be checked each time you have service with Lube Stop.  And, of course, we should check it anytime you have observed issues.  Your owner’s manual will also advise you to do it at various intervals.  Please check your manual.

Also, lean on us at Lube Stop for advice.  We use a system of processes called Precision Based Recommendations to help investigate a vehicle’s overall condition.  This system of inspection and trouble shooting helps us get a clearer picture of your car, truck, or SUV as it stands, today.  That is because it removes the guess work.  Learn more about this system below.

Context for these Services

Your vehicle uses an internal combustion engine.  This engine uses the combustion of fuel to power almost everything.  This is done when fuel alongside an air oxidizer and spark plugs creates a working fluid flow circuit inside a combustion chamber.

In your internal combustion engine, the expansion of the high-temperature and high-pressure gases produced by combustion applies direct force to some component of the engine.  The force is applied typically to pistons, turbine blades, rotors and nozzles.  This force moves the component over a distance, transforming chemical energy into useful work.

Typically, your combustion engine is fed with fossil fuels like natural gas or petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel fuel or fuel oil.  Your engine is the hub for many things, including those listed below.

  • combustion chamber
  • cylinder head
  • camshaft
  • set of spark plugs
  • valvetrain
  • valves
  • rocker arms
  • pushrods
  • lifters
  • fuel injectors
  • pistons
  • connecting rods
  • engine block
  • crankcase
  • crankshaft
  • timing system
  • timing chain

All these work in unison to power all the other systems within your vehicle.  Without a fully functioning engine, everything else suffers.  So, let us at Lube Stop keep your engine functioning and everything else that relies on it.
